I would consider getting rid of the pump. Am researching this now. I have great problems with wearing out the alternator belt on my 454 and the pump runs on the same belt. You will find several threads regarding this. I believe the end result would be elimination of a 5 HP drain, a lot of weight, and a better running engine.
Will be interested in other opinions. Tree huggers need not apply.

Could you please tell me what kind of noise the smog pump makes when it is bad ? I have a 87 Fleetwood 454 drove it back from Arizona, after 1200 miles heard a knocking sound. sounded like a rod or collapsed lifter. drove another 600 miles home, did not get any worse. checked the lifters and ok, was told it could be piston slap but that does not seem to be the problem either, hoping it is something much simpler, like a smog pump. than you Walter

I will be removing the smog pump, EGR and any other piece of smog I can find on my 454/1984 we just bought. The Air pump actual bleeds off a little air making it sound like an exhaust leak. The EGR dumps hot exhaust back into the engine so you get less power and runs hotter.
