|Fleetwood southwind 454 performance||D Schoene||2-13-05|
I live in Arizona and have a 1995 southwind with a 454 engine. This was a California registered RV and probably has California emission controls on it. It only has 21,000 miles on the engine. On flat ground or down hill the engine has lots of power but, on the slightest incline the engine struggles. Is there any thing that can be done to increase horsepower and gas mileage?

I had a somewhat similiar situation.....had the timing reset and changed to the oil mentioned above....VavVoom.....worked really well.....good luck with yours...I suspect the CA emission controls are part of the problem....let us know how it improves....have em check your catalytic converter and O2 sensor if so equipped.....

The two most obvious that come to my mind are 1) the Banks (or similar) system, which in a gas engine primarily addresses exhaust and air intake, or at the very least exhaust headers along with the least constricting legal mufflers. 2) Especially where you live, a high quality heat-dissipating motor oil, such as Mobil-1 15W50, which is where I'm going for my 454.
Good luck, and let us know,

Did you find a solution? I have a similar issue. My 454 will have intermitent backfires and loss of power up hills.

I've got a similar problem - just brought home an '89 Shasta 36' Class A with a 454 Chevy. It would backfire a little when accelerating uphill. Replaced the plug wires and plugs and reset the timing. The backfiring is gone (I think one of the wires was broken at the boot) but it doesn't have any power when accelerating at hightway speeds. I press down on the gas pedal and it just "mushes."
I set the timing to 4 degrees BTDC like the emmisions sticker said, but it wouldn't work off the #1 plug wire. Had to time off the #5 plug wire like someone suggested on another forum. I also changed the fuel filter at the TBI inlet. My next step will be to change out the large fuel filter and to check the choke to make sure it is opening fully. I think I might reset the timing to about 8 degrees. Also the emmission system is a mess, someone plugged/unplugged vacuum hoses and there are some unplugged wires that may be for various sensors.
I have my hands full on this one. Anyone have any other suggestions?

I had the same problem on the flat, down hill everything runs good Heavy wind uphill boogs down. I changed fuel pump fuel filters, wires cap still didn't work. Until I had the fuel tank dropped and found the boot inside the gas tank was doubled folded and dirty. Also had a kink in the rubber hose leaving the regulator at the top of the fuel tank. The 454 1989 winnbago run great now. The motor was straving for fuel.when you ask for the gas it would drain the 1/2 fuel when the 4 barrels cut in
