New rebuilt 454, from piecemill. Thermostat okay, pump okay, radiator is a 4 row heavy duty. Finally got the engine running but almost instantly starts to heat up and boil. Where should I start and what should I look for? Any help would be appreciated. Otherwise I have a $4,000 piece of scrap metal on my hands.
Need more information for a better diagnosis. What was changed during rebuild ex. heads, water pump, etc. Also how quick does it get hot. Are both radiator hoses getting hot(is water flowing). Have seen rebuilds where the wrong heads or head gaskets were installed, impeding water flow.
Sounds like a classic OVER BORE... What is the Bore.....20 or.30 or heaven forbid.40,.60 Or Classic Pluged HEAD Passeges I would start with knowing th eoVER BORE, Second MANUALLY Check TDC and Make sure you valve timming is OK and then of course check your IGN Timming, (as per manual, all hoses discounted and plugs as it says, Even the EVAP Canester if called for... Please
Report as I love to find out what was what and LEARN from it please cvoc13@yahoo.com
Also Wayne, When you say piecemill I took that to mean from all over th eplace then upon re-reading your post. I got to thinking it could be a NAME BRAND and then I goit very concerned.. so please clearify... Reason I am concearned is If truly from here there and everywhere then there is PLENTY of room for errors in any one of main areas of proper rebuild...
Did you have block and heads MAGNAFLUXED to check for Micro or hidden cracks? (does your system get pressure (cooling when you get the heat) (Hand check upper Rad hose)
I would say to everyone else reding this post i stake a lesson form it and when considering a REBUILD on a engine, Also consider A brand neW CREATE Engine from Chevy as a NEW 454 to officialy replace a mid 80s' is around 245 HP and 390 FT Trq (Same as mid 80's numbers) and SMOG LEGAL and about 4,000 dollars. Plus install.. long block (take all of your accy's and transfe3r them to new engine)
My 454 ran too hot also. I stripped off the engine A/C, all the pollution pumps, went from 5 belts to 2. Installed a 165 deg.thermostat (she likes that), installed porcielan coated headers, wrapped with header wrap back to the mufflers. This all was done to get heat away from engine and let her breathe more easily. Seems to work as she never gets hotter than 160..
Still gets appx 6 mpg though... Any help to increrase mpg's would be greatly appreciated...Good luck...
