I have a 1987 HR, with the 454 carbed engine. Driving interstates with posted 65mph speeds, can this engine\driveline sustain this speed without damage or excessive wear. I have a tach that reads about 3000 rpm at 60 mph but climbs to 3200 at 65 mph. Its not that I am in a hurry but there are times on the interstates that traffic is heavy and I seem to be holding people up. My engine is more important to me, Not their schedule--impatience.
"Also CHECK your tire pressure and KNOW you LOAD PER TIRE so you can KNOW you proper pressure to apply It is a under known fact you CAN NOT have proper inflation if you do not know your LOAD! On each tire or set of tire."
Speaking about tires and tire pressure, be sure to note the Maximum allowed pressure "Stamped into the rim" that can be used with that rim. A tire may be allowed to use 110 LBS, but the Rim may only allow 95 LBS. The sticker on the wall states recommended tire pressure of 70 LBS. No wonder my M/H only got 3 to 4 miles a gallon. I pumped mine up to 80 LBS in the front, and 90 LBS in the rear, No lie, 6 miles per City, 8 Miles per hi-way now. The only problem with the higher tire pressure is the slowing down of 14,500 lbs of weight.. Not hardly any De-tent now. But with a million miles of practice, I plan my stops a couple miles ahead of the game now. I really wouldn't recommend the higher than factory recommended tire pressure to everyone. It's very easy to get into trouble. Hello Prudential, or State Farm, who ever you might have. I have AARP now, I saved $183.00 compared to Progressive Insurance. For only $5.00 more, I got the $500.000 "Half Million Dollars" each accident, I can cause a lot of damage with this thing. Especially when I turn 90 y/o.
You can RELAX as long as you have a GOOD Cooling system, Dig this When Chevy Wanted to TEST the Reliability of the 454 (Marine, BUT no internal differences between ours and marine other then Accy's) They ran the 454 FULL THROTTLE and FULL LOAD for Not one Not two Hours, Not even three, (hours) they RAN it FULL Throttle FULL Load for 300 Hours... It did not break, It was fine, and they figured that Proved it was durable enough.
Plus Mine tach 3K at about 55 and about 3400 at 63-65 and we just did that FROM VEGAS to RENO last week durring the heat of the day, 115 degrees.. 14 % Humidity, I have pictures
I have a 1987 Komfort 31.6 ft, Class A, at 14,500 LBS, and it likes running 65 MPH better than 55 MPH. It gets better gas mileage. When I hit the small hills, it's not Lugging like it does at 55 MPH. These Big American V-8s are made to Run. There not made to be Lugged, that's really hard on the Crank Thrust Bearing. Keep Her Wound Up.
I see you have a low mielage engine like mine (36,000)had 28,000 when I purchased it. I would like to hear some coments on owners with high miles (origianl engine) and what their normal speeds are on interstates. The boat test is a tough test but it also was a constant load and no heat/cool cycling (I am guesing). Where did you here or read about this test would enjoy reading it.
The reason for Gary’s BETTER Mileage is a treat referred to Volumetric Efficiency (VE) IF you read about your CARB and you will read and learn that there are 3 Enrichments cycles, measured in term of Inches of Vacuum.. You might find that while you are cruising at 55 your vacuum is at 5 Inches as you are not in the SWEET SPOT (the VE zone) While Gary at 65 might hold 12 inches of vacuum.. just about the 2nd enrichment metering zone (as I recall Our Rochester carbs have 3 zones, one at 18-12 second enrichment zone from 7 12 and the power mode is at less then 7 inches so you see while you are at 55 and have a lower Vac signal due to throttle position Gary is on the idle and first power enrichment cycle.. PUT A VAC gauge in, and trust me once you learn your habits you will quickly see where to improve your mileage and done listen to the people who laugh about us wanting to improve our mileage they are not paying 240 a gal! We are.. Also CHECK your tire pressure and KNOW you LOAD PER TIRE so you can KNOW you proper pressure to apply It is a under known fact you CAN NOT have proper inflation if you do not know your LOAD! On each tire or set of tire..
That's good news, Gary, but how can it be? Sounds like getting something for nothing, which I've never been able to do. Sometimes I feel lucky if I get something for something. :-)
"When I hit the small hills, it's not Lugging like it does at 55 MPH." Keyword, Hills & Lugging it. The Momentum is their at 65 compared to 55, don't have to slam the gas pedal to the floor as hard, or grab another gear as often. Big blocks have the lower end Torque, if you keep it wound up. It's like they get a second breath, or leg, what ever you want to call it, around 65. You ever drive one of the old mid 60s Lincoln Continentals, 70 miles an hour plus, wasn't anything to one of them, than the Energy Crises came alone, and the Drive 55, and their went the gas mileage, and thats a fact.
I have a 90 southwind with a Ford 460 with a Holly 4 barrel and 3 speed transmission and I can't tell you about the gas milage, but I know it runs better at 65 than at 55. Seems like it has a speed where everything sort of comes together.
