Ok heres my question and info i have a 1980 ford bronco that i have put a 1973 big block 429 in it had a GM quadrajet(not a factory thing) carburator on it and it ran pretty good but it was a small carburator the choke stuck alot so it wouldent crank and it flooded way to easy for my taste so i swapped it out for a edelbrock 600cfm performer series carburator and started having problems it would diesel every time i shut the truck off so i took it to the mechanics to try and adjust it and my timing the book says my timing should be 8 degrees but the engine was set at 30 degrees so when the engine got set back to 8 like it said to the engine lost alot of power and had a popping sound comeing from the carb like small back firing so the only conclusion me and the mechanic could come up with was the timing chain must be a tooth or 2 off kinda unlikley but it was possible so i took it back in today and he pulled the cover and the timing chain was dead on so now we have a new problem but the big question is what could it be? the mechanic is keeping it over night and is putting the cover back on in the morning and said he would "tinker" with a few things but i think hes at a loss toso does anyone else have any ideas? im open to about anything at this point and if possible please e-mail any replys to my e-mail address i plan on posting this question on as many forums as i can to see what answers i get and i might forget to check back on this one.
thanks,sean simonson

Tell the tech to take a real good look at the harmonic balancer--the thing with the timing marks on it---to see if the outer part has moved around on the rubber between the outer rim and the hub.
Good point Sam. Its really Rare, but it does happen.
The easiest way to check the Timming Mark on the Harmonnic Balancer would be, to get Number 1 cylinder on Top Dead Center, than check to see if the mark on the balancer and the pointer are lined up, or not, as to say Zero.
The Timming can be set to 15 degrees, and will start and run good. But when you start pushing 30 degrees, you gotta watch out you don't start bending Rods.
I talked to my mechanic today and he pulled the carb off and said where the carb bolts to the manifold theres a EGR hole and the adapter plate i had on there was for a quadra jet and the holes were to big and basicly it was just letting my exaust back into the engine it had burned a hole through the carb gasket and burned the adapter plate he aid hes 99% sure thats what it is so im hopeing for the best thanks for your help, Sean

Not at all rare, i have seen it all the time....(balancer rotation, making timming marks way off.. iF YOU PUT NEW Marks Just remember you have doine nothing to keep iot form spinning.. Time With VACUME Gauge, and sound Also do what last post said and GET # 1 to TDC and see where the marks are This time, REPLACE Balancer if it has slipped as suspected,
