I have a Pace Arrow 79 with a Dodge 440. Last month while I was on vacation in Montana I noticed my check EGR light was on. Around the same time I noticed that I started to lose power especially going up hills and also from a standing start. I also lost about two inches of vacuum. What do you think might be my problem? I did change the carb about 8 or 10 thousand miles ago. I went from a thermoquad to a quadrajet. But it seemed to be running fine with the different carb.
Sam was right about the egr light. I talked to the previous owner and he told me it comes on every 15 or 20,000 miles. The egr valve is actually capped off and so is non-functional. We did that when we changed the intake manifold to a performa. I actually started in California and went up thru Oregon and Washington part of Idaho up into some of Canada and then thru Montana. I noticed that it did run alittle better as we got into Utah and Nevada. But there was still that loss or vacuum and some loss of power. We are thinking that maybe the carb is what is acting up.
I don't believe your vehicle is equipped with a "trouble" light, but rather, just a routine normal system maintenance reminder light which came on at set mileage intervals. Somewhere under the dash, (near the steering column if I remember correctly) is a small control that has a reset on it for this light.Your EGR system had a device called a vacuum amplifier on it that used a weak venturi vacuum signal from the carb to feed controlled vacuum from a stronger source to the EGR. I don't believe the QuadaJet has this venturi vacuum tap, unless it is one designed to replace the T-Quad.
I am willing to bet you EGR is STUCK (open or closed does not really matter what position, BUT your rig is trying to get it to OPEN (move) by sending Vacuum to it, thus you are loosing 2" of Vacuum, as it is AS IF YOU HAVE A LINE OFF now that the valve is in op the signal is never getting to a CLOSED position (valve either open or closed will still stop the vacuum signal this stop the draw / leak in Vac... Replace your EGR Valve, Simple and less then 100.00 bucks usually... also Why did you go from the Thermo to the normal, That Thermo quad should have been the EXCATE same as the quad jet only with some REAL "Cool" Insulator properties to keep the floats bowls from boiling on high demand hot days... I understand the two carbs are identical expect except in insulator properties.. Did you use some kind of HEAT displacing Gasket at least?
Sam, Agreed. If Flatlander Higher ele. would also account for less vac... due to Thiner air or Less Dense, Then He said he lost power, I am betting his EGR is ACTING up at least... But You will have and in fact MUST have a higher level of knowlage as I do NOT have or have ever had a SMOG lic. That is a Serious lic... Lots of study, Congradulactions
Chuck, the point I am trying to make is that as I remember it(I'm a retired auto tech and held a "Smog" license in CA) is that his rig did not have much, if any, (I'll find my Cascade manuals and see exactually what it had in the way of any on-board diagnostics), and that what he was looking at was a maintenence reminder light, not a fault detected light. The other thing I noted was that he stated that in Montana he noticed a lack of power and a 2" drop in vacuum. He didn't mention a rough idle---EGR valve open at all times---which would, as you state, account for a drop in vacuum, but also give a rough idle( mixture too lean, a functional test of the EGR is to activate it at idle and note idle quality). It is possible that he is a "flatlander", and this was the first time he had the rig at higher elevations where, as you know, the conditions he states occur.
