Loss of power on 1991 Southwind with chevy 454 Steve 5-20-03
I have a 91 southwind I bought used with 42K miles. It seems to occasionally lose power going up grades. It also seems to have more power at 3/4 throttle than full throttle. When operating at full throttle it backfires through the throttle body after an extended period (long grades). It just passed smog, so timing at idle is OK. I look through the receipts and find that the right side exhaust manifold was recently replaced, because it was cracked. Is it fuel starvation? timing? it seems that altitude and high outside temps make it worse. The previous owner put a make shift cold air intake by routing a 5 inch dryer flex hose from the air cleaner to the front grill and installed a K&N filter..could this be the cause?

You have to check fuel pressure first. You could have a partially clogged fuel filter. You could have faulty ignition wires, or there is a remote possibility that your map sensor is failing.

Another possibility is exhaust back pressure.
