My 1989, 32' Champion La Salle has a very strange problem. Driving down the road after a fuel up, the front end will shake violently (you can actually see the wheels rythmically and in sync move to and fro) until the engine backfires. Generally, this happens only once each time after a fill-up then behaves until the next fill-up. The front end has been inspected several times as have the wheels. The chasis is a very simple, sturdy John Deere. The feeling of the front end jolting is similar (but greatly magnified and longer lasting in duration) to what happens when you hit a fairly good bump in the road. The RV sat unused for a year while we lived in it in Washington. I think we have bad gas or sludge in the tank, and the engine is backfiring so badly that it is literally shaking the front end. When this happened in Canada the last mechanic who looked at it decided to dump about a gallon of additive into the engine, and the problem disappeared. Other mechanics I have talked to swear that this problem cannot be related to the engine misfiring. Has anyone else encountered a problem like this. I noticed that another fellow had a problem with backfire from a broken distributor.
I can't see a relatoinship between the two. But this is one that a person diagnosing would probably have to drive or ride in it when the problem occurs to get a feel for what is happening. Can you fill it with gas and then take your favorite mechanic for a ride?
