We own a 1978 RV with a Dodge 440 engine that has a cracked manifold on the passenger side. I am looking for a replacement and I don’t know where to start. Does any one know where I can go to find used or third party parts. Or should I just change out the exhaust system go to headers? The RV is old and I am trying to keep the cost down.
Ernie's right. Get Thorleys. Hedmans won't fit 440-3 and Hooker is too light duty.
I didn't get 50 hits at car-parts.com that apply to your RV. Lots of car manifolds and other years. Maybe those could work.
I paid $350 for my Thorleys. I needed both manifold replaced. The cheapest replacement I found at the time was $125 ea plus shipping those heavy cast iron manifolds($$$$). Which would have been cheaper over all, but that's still putting on USED equipment. The marriage of the headers to the existing exhaust system is very simple and not a factor in my decision.
If you're trying to keep costs down, headers aren't the way to go. Headman, Hooker and Thorley headers for a 440 motorhome engine will run about $350 -500 depending on the manufacturer. Plus you'll have to change the exhaust pipes from the headers back, either new or tie in to existing.
You also have to be careful when purchasing header that they will fit a 440-3 engine, which is typically found in a motorhome. Most cheaper headers won't fit the 440-3, only the car 440.
If you want to keep costs down look for a used manifold. Call a truck wrecking yard and have them look for you. You can also take the manifold to a welding shop and have them fix it. Today's products for cast iron welding are fabulous and they could probably fix it for about $35-50.
I am looking for information on Dodge Transvans arround the 1978 year, I have a 1972 Dodge Motorhome, but may want to purchase a Transvan, I am located in central California.
Pics, or Information, brochures, ect, anything you may have acess to would be appreciated.
Contact Thorley Headers in California.
If you replace the manifold it will crack again. Headers will improve engine temperture drasticaly, and help with power and gas mileage.
Don't know much on where to find one. But I was curious because I have a 78 allegro also and haven't seen to many of them around. I have a dodge 440 also thats 26ft long. I have been looking to replace the tin on the front passenger side and have no idea where to find something like. I will keep looking and if I hear something I will let you know.
