I have a 1986 Allegro with a Chevrolet 454 engine which just recently started backfiring. It runs great at highway speeds, and without warning, feels like someone turns key off. Sometimes after a few seconds it will backfire out tailpipes and run fine again for a while. Other times, it does not come back on. When I turn the key to the off position and back to the on position, it then backfires out the tailpipes and runs fine again. I just replaced the plugs, wires, cap and rotor, but no change. Any ideas?
We have a 1989 Allegro motorhome with a 1988 Chevy 454 engine. It backfires on the passenger side only and the exhaust pipes turned red from the heat. It has 2 smog pumps on it. Just rebuilt the carb (float was sticking), replaced spark plugs, fuel filter, has new alternator, battery tested out fine. Any suggestions??
Change the fuel filters, in line & at carb. I hade the same problem in Texas changed all electrical (no help); changed inline filter (some help); forgot carb. has a filter, changed carb filter runs great.
RV with 454 engine. 39,665 miles. Runs smoothly while driving. Turn off ignition & engine continues to run w/very loud exhaust pipe back fire. Shop replaced spark plugs and wires. Problem continued. (Shop stated throttle catching on carpet (!!!) Need advice on solution.
1996,454 TB/FI. Engine backfires & kinda cuts out only during a climb,(runs great on the interstate)Installed new CO2 senser, problem got worse, just replaced the fuel filter.havn't taken it out to see how that goes, I guess the next items are new enjectors and an egr valve...and suggestions.
Well, thanks for all the suggestions.....I think I have fixed the problem. I replaced the module in the bottom of the distributor as well as the coil on the top of the distributor and the problem seems to have ceased. It also now starts immediately with the turn of the key, which had also become a problem with cold starts. I am not sure which one fixed it, but am happy the backfiring stopped! Thanks again!
Hubby says it is the timing chain gone bad, spark plugs, disterbater cap has pin size crack But mostly the timing is off use a timing lite and check your timing on it
When I had this problem on my 454 it was caused by alternator failure. Must have happened as I was driving and I didn't notice it until the battery was so low it could not fire the spark plugs consistently, so unburned fuel started exploding in the exhaust system. New battery and alternator fixed it.
1993 Itasca 32' Motorhome with 454 engine with fuel injection.
Problem: Engine appears to be over-fueling. It seems to flood out. Presently in the shop for repair but they are unable to determine cause. Vehicle has new alternator, new battery, new ignition wires. The distributir has checked out ok. The fuel injector pigtails have been replaced. The futrel filter has been replaced. The fuel pump is OK. mechanic "thinks" it might be a computer that causes the fuel injectors not to shut off. PLEASE HELP!!
