Check out www.priate4X4.com and go to their bb & post your question. I believe that 77 is exempt from age now but not positive another resource is www.arb.ca.gov the arb official web site
Re: ford 460 smog Sam Watson 3-25-03
Under CA State Senate Bill, enacted 1997, 1966 thru 1973 year vehicles are smog check exempt. Another provision of that bill was a rolling 30 year old exemption,to take effect in 2003. That would mean that in '03, '73 and older vehicles would be exempt, in '04, '74 and older vehicles would be exempt, and so on. This provision of the bill is currently trying to be repealed. According to my Cascade Auto Resource's Emission Control Systems Application Manual, if your '77 F350 is over 8500 GVW, and it most likely is, there is no listing of emission control equipment, which indicates it has none, except for perhaps a pcv valve. This GVW requirement may have been bumped up to 9200 Lbs, nevertheless, if the truck was originally certified for sale outside CA, it would lack most smog control equipment. If it were orginally certified for sale in CA then it should have, (if an automatic), PCV system, TAC, (heated air to the air cleaner, AIS, (Smog pump and hoses and valves), and EGR valve with controls and hoses. The Cascade Manual is not always 100% correct, but for the most part it is.Not all available engine/transmission/driveline packages were certified for sale in CA. The mfgrs wouldn't go to the expense of certifying certain packages if they thought the sales weren't going to be high enough to justify the cost. If your under-hood label is still there, ( it was/is right in front of the radiator on the panel that contains the hood latch), then it lists the certification, (CA or Federal), and all the required equipment. Any Smog Check station in the inspection required counties will have a current manual listing the required equipment.
