My tioga 460ford has developed a problem. at about 50 mph the trans appears to slip. the engine is revving up but the rv won' respond to the increase in power from the engine. accompanied with the lack of power is a loud hissing noise from the right side of the engine by the exhaust manifold. the transs does leak fluid on occassion. any clues? i was told to check the catalytic converter but would that cause the rv to not have power at about 5mph? thanks talipp.

I forgot to mention that it is a 1989 ford tioga with about 34000 miles.

Yes, it is possible for the catalytic converter, or muffler, or screen in the end of the tailpipe to become blocked. I've seen the main catalyst monolith break up in Fords, and a chunk get cornerwise in the outlet. I've also seen mufflers get clogged with loose rust, and the loose rust flow to the end of tailpipe then not be able to get out because of the screen. When this happens, transmission may not upshift or if downshifted (kicked down), vehicle speed will actually drop. The exhaust note will be very low or nonexistent and you'll hear the wheeze or hiss you describe. See if there's a screen in the end of the tailpipe and if there is, if there's debris on the inside of it. Hope this helps. God Bless, jd

Restricted cat conv can be checked with a vacuum gauge. If exhaust can not be easily expelled, intake manifold vacuum, as well as power, will be low.

Sam Knows!!!! That's all you need is a Vacuum Gage. Hook it up, hold the gas pedal about half way down, if the vacuum starts drooping, while holding at a steady RPM, the engine isn't breathing, with the exhaust being restricted, to much back pressure. Another sure sign of a restricted exhaust system, are engine oil being blown out all over the place, like oil leaks that all of a sudden appeared. Check for oil in the Air Cleaner. A for sure sign of to much back preasure, and or, other major engine problems.
