Chieftan 454 fuel odor George 12-12-02
Guess I put this in the wrong group.
I just purchased an 89 Winnebago 25'with 55k and the 454 carburetored motor. The exaust smells like raw fuel. The exaust looks clean. It passed emmissions. Starts okay. It doesn't seem to have as much power as I would expect and could run smoother. It has stock ignition. Any ideas???

Hi George
I have a 1989 winnebago cheiftan same engine had a raw gas smell in back turned out to be a gas regulater valve inside frame rail beside the gas tank leaking gas, if so you have to drop the tank to get to it a new one cost me $120.00 plus installation fee. So I had it done. I won't make that mistake again cost me a fortune and got a half xxx job. I read on the internet a while later that a guy bought a diaphragm for the regulater and fixed it himself for FOUR dollars plus his labor, I never saw any gas leaking on the ground at any time, hope this helps. The old man

Had odor around my tanks. Dropped them to change out the rotten fuel lines and found both tanks had a pipe that was open to the atmosphere (apparently from the factory) These were supposed to be routed to a charcoal canister which had not been installed. Don't know if you have same problem, might be worth looking.
