454 engine clatter Dan 9-8-02
My 85 Palm Beach, 32 footer, P-30 chassis, was loaned out recently and returned with engine clatter. The person using coach had no info to lend regarding when this happened or when etc. My oil pressure sender is bad so my oil pressure readings cannot be used. I do check oil every 500 miles etc. I am checking thru engine to determine cause of clatter. Its not water pump (removed belt and still have noise) Its not a broken valve spring (removed valve covers and checked)
I have tried to drop the pan but it will not clear engine without removing transmission.
Here are my questions:
#1 Can I replace rod inserts without removing engine?
#2 Can I swap in a 6.5 diesel to gain low end torque and no change rear end?
#3 Will a diesel bolt up to the transmission OK?
#4 Is rearend ratio OK for diesel?
Thanks for any help, Dan

First off, if you have a clatter probably just replacing rod bearings won't help as the damage probably goes deeper than just rod bearings. Is it a clatter or a knock? Is it from deep in the engine or more toward the top? You could have cam and lifter problems. You could have spun rod bearings. Is there metal in the old oil?
Next, the differential and ratio is ok, but your transmission will not work with the 6.5. The best thing to do is fix your oil pressure gauge and repair or replace the 454.
