|454 reluctant start||mike sweeney||3-5-16|
|60k miles FW Flair w all new batts and alternator wont start even warm; solinoid click as if dead. Aux start no. Kill coach batt between use no effect, batt test lights show green over stove. Direct jump both terminals house 2 coach no. External batt jump ify. Running vehicle jump yes. Positive terminal ONLY house 2 coach YES (i now leave this n place). Used to start easy but for 3-5 min on warmup rpm would fluctuate w rapid clicking of voltage relay, amp guage and lights reflecting; 9-12 amps. Leaving positive jump n place, this no longer happens. Once in a great while, say 1 of 100 starts a loud gong (bell) sound comes from dog house, ma repeat up 2 three times fading n intensity. Sounds like liberty bell|

|454 hot high draw starter.|
Also sounds like bad ground path to House batteries. (Could be Positive side as well, but most people check that first thing)
Hot starter fixes: Add or change ground straps between engine and frame, check frame to battery and frame to battery.
Make sure no Exhaust leaks on right side of engine.
Modifications: Sheild starter from heat, many 454 engines came with a starter heat sheild, it may be missing.
My dad ran a cold air duct so the motion blew cool air on the starter. Worked great as long as he re-started within 3 minutes of parking, otherwise had to sit 45 minutes.
But at the end of the day it comes down to some starters cant take the heat.
Try a high tourque big block starter if or after the above ideas dont work.
