|Starter problem. Stranded and desperate||Harlan||2-4-16|
|Put new starter, solenoid and battery but when it cranks up starter is still engaging and started smoking so to battery cables off. Please help family in need of advice. No money for mechanic or towing. Thanks|

|You did not tell us what the unit is.|
So best guess: Faulty starter relay or sticky ignition switch.
Second best guess, starter had an internal failure. Most common on Chev starters from The 1970's and 80's where the end clip pops off and the "bedix" travels to far and jams the solinoid. I had this happen to me in front of the Fire Fighter training school in 1984. Embarassing.
But what it comes down to is by pass the problem if its a unrelaible start circuit. Snip the wire to the solinoid and wire in a push button at the dashboard.
