|1979 Dodge C-Class 440||Brent||6-6-14|
Just bought, got it home & this started happening.
1979 Dodge 440 C-Class, Had the battery checked & changed, changed the alternator & starter. When I go to start it, it has a slow turnover, sometimes with a jump it will pick up speed & start, most times it just turns over slow til the battery is to low. I changed the ballest resister & it started great for about 6 times then went back to it's old tricks. I can't find any problems with the wiring, but it's 35 years old ? (only 69,000. miles)

You have one of the following:
A faulty starter, these obsolete starters are often "Bad out of the box"
A high resistance starter or ground cable. It is common for old cables to have internal corrosion or fatigue failers you can see.
A bad conection @ battery, block, chassis or starter.
A decent mechnic can diag this 100% acurately in about 20 minutes. He will probably use bosster cables to do this.
If he can't you need another mechanic.

So I've checked all the ground connections. I said previously that I changed the starter but I didn't, I took it into a Auto Elec. shop, they did a free bench test & said it was fine. When I cross connect at the starter it turns fast. I'm going to take the big boat down to them & hope it's something simple.

I finally got into the shop & yes you were right, it was the starter. I guess it was a wast of time taking it in for a bench test because it needs to be under load to test it properly. Now I know.
Thanks for your help Bubba.
