454 w/ front oil cooler capacities bob montgomery 5-13-14
Hi rv mechanic and people,
I hope you can answer my question
I have a 1982 southwind 31ft w/ 454
the oil stick was missing, on rebuild

I have a standard pan with extended
oil cooler lines to the front grill,
about 5 foot oil in and return about 5 foot total about 10 foot cooler lines
1/4 to 5/16 th inside diameters
and standard filter on the engine base

how can I best determine true oil capacity and best weight synthetic oil

there seems to be much question as to actual operating oil capacities, bob

You will either have to get the GM part # for the dipstick from GM or replace it and the tube as a set. Any similar 454 motor home set will be correct as long as replaced as a set.

As to capacity, due to possible Motor Home factory modification no one knows.

Use 10W30 or 10W40 Defy or other high Zinc motor oil to protect your camshaft. Synthetic always preferd but MUST BE high Zinc
