Cold start 440, smoke, then nothing rick 4-23-14
Tried cold starting 440 on 1970 Coronet. It was stiff when I turned the key and then wouldn't stop turning over. Then smoke came out of the hood scoops... Then nothing when I turned the key.
Any Ideas what's gone?

The starter or the one of the two starter solinoids or the wiring that feeds the starter has fried.

At a guess the starter jammed in the strt position due to a fender mount faulty solinoid.

From there the starter burned up or the main cable to the starter melted down.

Commonly the Solinoid fails due to a faulty starter that over draws amperage through the system.

I recomend a starter tear down, replacement of the (Relatively) inexpensive fender mount solinoid and battery cables from battery all the way to the starter. Ground from block to battery cable is a good idea as well.

Good Luck
