1998 GM 454 Vortec engine will start then stall Don 12-30-13
1998 454 Vortec engine stalled when sitting idling at a food stop after a trip of 200 miles. Ambient temperature 25 deg. Would not restart immediately. After sitting for a few minutes it would start right up and run about 15-20 seconds then stall. Can hear fuel pump run on key up. Replaced fuel filter..no change. Noticed tach dropping out when engine dies. A couple times it appeared to stumble before stalling and tach dropped to zero when the engine stumbled then came back then dropped and engine stalled. Must always sit for a spell before it will restart. Intend to go back tomorrow morning when engine cold to try to figure out if temperature related. Any suggestions or experience with similar issue appreciated.

Sounds like the ignition control module in the distributor or the pick up is bad.

These are both components that can fail in a heat sensitive way.

Good Luck

Problem solved...after sitting all night at ambient temp of 11 F the engine started right up and ran about 15 minutes then began same stalling routine. Changed coil and distributor module...no difference. Changed crank sensor...problem solved. Hope this post helps someone else in the future.
