96 460 Ford wobble after hitting bumpy section of road Bob 6-10-02
After hiitting a bumpy section of road in my 1996 Gulfstream Sun Sport at only 55 mph the steering wheel started to wobble, getting worse and worse until I hit the brakes and slowed down about 10 mph to 45 mph - then all was normal again. It hasn't happened again.

What is wrong with the front end to cause this?

If you haven't fixed the problem yet and you have assured yourself that you have no loose or worn front end parts go to the tires. Either balance or replace even though they may look pretty good to the eye. Most cases this is the problem experienced when fornt tires are out of balance radially and this condition is hard to diagnose by just looking at them.

Bob, check your steering stabilizer. Its the shock absorber looking thing connected to the steering mech. It may have a coil spring around it. Haven't had my rv one go out, but had an old vw bus one time that did the identical same thing.

Welcome to the world of Ibeam front axles. The Dodge chassis used to do the same thing on occasion.

Thanks a mullens, that's what I was thinking also.

Do you or anyone else know if a "Safe-T-Steer" steering stabilizer would eliminate this occasional wobble?

Hi Bob,

Just found this forum and noticed your question. We just got back from a 1200 mile trip through Arizona and several times I had this same thing happen to me on my 97 Georgie. I had a 77 Exec that did the samething and put the springs on that didn't cure it. I took it to a front end shop that had an old guy working at it and he said that after a while the springs settle and that changes the position of your front wheels. After several times he finally got it right where the wheels were a little behind and not in front. This took care of the wobble. I'm taking my 97 to the same shop this week. I've only had this thing 6 months and the first time it happened, but it is scary.

Good luck.

Ed
