83 ford econoline xl fuel pump quits Ron 6-16-12
This problem has slowly gotten worse over time. The motorhome runs fine for about 5 to 15 minutes, then just quits. Let it sit for 5 minutes, and it will start and run fine for another 15 minutes. I replaced the electric fuel pump (external Holly red) and filter, no difference. I connected the fuel pump directly to a separate battery so it was not affected by vehicle relays, etc. and found it would run for a few minutes, then slows, then stops. It starts again if I let it cool for a few minutes. It gets warm to the touch, but not hot. What in the recirculation fuel system could cause the pump to intermittently stop?

Update: On the off chance the recirc valve was bad or plugged, I bypassed it with a piece of rubber fuel line, and ran the pump again. I quit within 5 minutes. I then pulled the pump out, connected hoses to the inlet and outlet, and stuck them in a 5 gallon can of gas. I connected the power and it ran for about 5 minutes before it quit. This is a brand new Holly Red pump. Am I missing something here, or is it just amazing coincidence that the new pump is bad and is doing exactly the same as the old Holly Red pump started doing after 1000's of miles.
