Improve mileage on class C - 440ci Jeff B 11-22-11
I have a 1978 Brougham 23 ft class C on a Dodge 350 frame. The 440 engine has one 4 bbl carb. It has 60,000 miles and has been well looked after. Still it gets only around 6 mpg. I have kept it in tune and serviced the trans regularly. Any ideas how I can improve mileage? Would be happy to do the right mechanical upgrades to the engine if they would be effective in increasing mileage. All ideas welcomed. Thanks!

In 1978 Dodge was deep into the era of the Thermo-Quad carb. It works OK after a bunch of tuning work but is generally junk. I take grat pleasure tunning them with my favorite 5 pound sledge.
1st buy a Edelbrock carb and have pecision tuned, this will raise the fuel economt about as much as external stuff can. A good tune will re-curve your distributor and jet the carb correctly.
Next a set of headers and a free flow exshaust.
Finally a rebuild that includes an increase in compresion and a setting the cam timing properly.
As you can see even the basic stuff cost good money for relitivly little gain. The carb might get 1.5 to 2 MPG if your carb is as bad as they usually are and you won't see over 10 MPG after having spent 3 to 5 thousand dollars in parts and machining.
You can still buy a bunch of fuel for 5 grand.
Good Luck
