|Dodge 440 RV||Mark||11-16-11|
|I have a 1976 Dodge Rv with a 440 in it. It starts up and has been running fine except after it comes to a stop. When i go to accelerate again, it sputters and sounds like its backfiring a little. Any ideas what it may be?|
Also, i started to smell a bruning rubber scent after the last time i drove it. Any help and support is appreciated. Thank you!

|The sputter on pull away is called a "Bog" amd is usually caused by a poor accelerator pump on the carb. Some Dodges also did this if the cross over for exsaust gasses under the intake is plugged.|
As to the burning rubber smell, please be carefull because it could be anywhere on you engine or exshaust system and cause serious safety issues.
But if I had to guess you have a leaking valve cover or two or a bad oil pressure sender dripping oil on something hot.

|You need to check for the common problems. first check if you have fuel coming into the carb, to do that, pull the cover off the carb, you can pump the gas while looking down the carb and see if it's squirting any fuel, you can also look while cranking.|
second check for spark, pull the number one spark plug wire, (or any will do, but #1 is always best to check) put a screw driver into the boot of the wire and hold the metal shaft of the screwdriver about an 8th inch away from the end of the exposed plug, have a friend crank the engine over and see if you can see a spark.
then you can troubleshoot more from there.
