1978 Dodge Sportsman Motorhome fire! What's up? Steve 2-12-11
Hi. I have been given (as a thx for work) a 78 dodge sportsman motorhome with a 440 engine. It evidently had a fire and hasn't been started since. I have noticed online, other 78-79 440's that have had carb fires as well. What causes these fires and what kind of carb should I replace the original with? Any info on this model that can minimize surprises is helpful! Thanks.

It is a Thermaquad and they had a plastic body, They often cracked and leaked gas and caused fires and in some cases the 440 exhaust manifold would crack on the passenger side and along with a leaking valve cover gasket would cause a fire, The fire would melt the plastic body carb and the Carb would get the blame for this fire also, The thermoquad is a great carb, They just can not be over tightened because that will bust the plastic body of the carb, You can replace it with a Holly or a Rochester Quadrajet or even a Edelbrock carb, I would go back with the plastic carb just don't over tighten it because it will break the body of the carb.
