I have a '79 Dodge Sportsman I am looking at to possibly buy. The sticker under the hood says it's a 440. Just by looking at it, it looks like a small block engine. The valve covers are about the size of a small block chevy. Did somebody swap out a 440 for a 318 or 360? Or do big block dodge's not have the wide valve covers like Ford and Chevy?
BB have the distributor right front of block.
SB at the rear like a Chevy.
Casting and block size is identified by a small spot on the block up by the dist on BBs
Mopar big blocks have the distributor in the front of the engine, meaning closer to the radiator. Down on the block there is a flat machined area next to the hole where the distributor goes into. The block will be stamped 440X x=the year of the block casting A through where ever they are at nowN maybe.Usually a bunch of crud on that area, but its is there. Also on the bottom of the block and oilpan are about mid way back its stamped into a machine surface too. Good luck. Mopars are way better then chevies for durability in RV's.
