1979 ford 460 jason 10-29-09
So i just bought a 1979 motorhome with the 460 and the guy that sold it to me said it just needs a new carb because it runs really rough. once you start pressing on the gas it will only go about 30 miles an hour and the motor shakes really bad. so im kinda lost because i have put on new carb edlebrock 600 cfm, new distrubtor, new vac advance, new fuel pump, new plugs wires, went throught the entire vacumm system and no real change. so what now please help me out thanks
Re: 1979 ford 460 BUBBA THE BUS TECH 10-29-09
As usual I am making wild guesses. I assume you changed the plugs. The spark plugs should show an abnormal burn pattern for this problem, Black on some, good on others. So did you inspect the distributor cap and rotor and changed them? Have you checked your fuel pressure under load? It must meet the carb manufacturers spec. Is the exaust pluged? It will sound pluged to people on the street. Is it popping back through the carb? At this point in the proccess if it is none of the above you need to pull valve covers and measure valve lift. New type oil and old flat tappet camshaft motors don't get along and the camshaft could have a single bad exaust lobe and cause this bad a problem. Good luck

So this yes i did change the distributor cap and rotor and no the exaust is not pluged. it doesn't back fire in the carb and yes fuel pressure is to spec. so still am lost have thought about pulling the camshaft but that means might as well pull the whole engine and rebuild it and i really dont want to do that so any more advince
