Ford 460 Vapor Lock - type problem Ray Irwin 10-27-09
RV with Ford 460 engine (44,000 miles). After driving up hill under hot conditions- and coming to a stop - engine quits. Must cool for 2 hours- then it's normal again. Mechanics are stumped. Replaced filters - replaced ignition module, pick up assbly, coil. Pressure tests indicate fuel pump OK.
Any suggestions?

First does it quit or do you shut it off and it won't re-start. Either way it has a heat soak failure. Usually these are the parts you have replaced already but if it is injected it could be a whole host of other sensors that are failing at high temp. It needs to be checked for fuel delivery and spark the next time it fails. I could change virtually every sensor/pick up and computer to find the fuel pump relay is bad at high tepuratures if I cant reproduce the failure. If you can let it cool off for 5 or ten minutes before shutting it off. It may become a none issue. By the way in tank pumps have been known to still run but the fuel is so hot it boils in the pump and thus no start. Good Luck
