I am looking to replace both of my exhaust manifolds on my 1989 Chevy 454. I want to just buy a stock replacement. I would be greatful if you have any information concerning this.
Make sure the radiator does not leak. Make sure the radiator is not plugged. Make sure the clutch-fan works properly. Make sure the temperature gauge is accurate. Make sure you have good air flow through radiator and in engine compartment. make sure the water pump is working. Make sure the hoses are not collapsing during deceleration. Make sure the electric fan operates when it is supposed too. Make sure the engine is not running lean, that will cause manifolds to turn red hot. Test the engine with a vacuum gauge. I have had a lot of fun replacing exhaust manifolds in my motor-home. The manifold screws have a special thread do not use bolts from some other project or you damage the head. Do not force the screws, the manifold may be warped. If you re-surface the old manifold the screws may not align up, must match the gasket. Good luck, God help you.
I just took the manifolds off my 1981 Winnebago 454 to install headers. I would be willing to sell them. I believe that the right hand (passenger side) has been replaced before. E-mail me if interested.
