Hi Mark;
your 84 has a mechanical fuel pump on the engine---letting it get that low is definately not good---you have a lot of weight to stop---and when the engine dies---braking is much more difficult--when I was using my older 84 Pace Arrow---I Never let it get lower than 1/4 tank---never know when gas will NOT be available.like the problems currently in the southern and eastern states--also change the fuel filter--it should be on the right side along the frame. and yes---you will get gas all over you--
