454 Chevy fuel problems by Mark

I recently purchased a 1984 30' Winnebago chieftain w. Chevy 454 motor. It is in good condition w. 69k on the clock. It died on the highway with my wife and kids the other day. I let the gas tank get down fairly low, oops!, and had to add 6 gallons of gas and take the air cleaner off to get it going. Is this a common issue with these?? Also, my local RV dealer is hesitant to work on it because they say it is "carbureted" and apparently too old. Any ideas would be great...
