I have a Dodge 440 in my motorhome. If I take the coil wire to ground (valve cover). I only get a spark when i turn the key on, nothing during cranking and then get a spark when I turn the key off.......Any ideas??
The coil is good and getting power. To check: Pull the cap and see if the rotor goes round and round. if it does check continuity accross the pickup. There is a spec for resistance but I can't rember it. if good check the wiring from the pickup to the module. If it checks good check the ground on the module (probably good from your symptoms) then replace the module. Quick check of coil if you ever need to do one is to get your 12 volt test light and hook it to the coil and ground. Roll the engine over and it will flash on one side of the coil or the other. Good Luck
Specs or pickup relay coil,as per MOTOR'S TRUCK REPAIR MANUAL,motorhomes, etc, copywrite 1979:150-900 ohms...ALSO,note that the dodge/mopar BALLAST RESISTOR IS DIFFERANT for trucks-vs-cars,ie: trucks have an OPEN side on back for the coil/compensating side of resistor WITH 0.5 ohms/THERMAL type.
I have same problem...can't find my specs for diagnosing the ignition control unit(resistance checks)...anyone have THOSE SPECS??
I've got a ford econoline xl Tiago and it starts and run and then shuts down is this a electrical problem or a fuel problem. it starts drives down the road away then shuts down, help steve
Sorry was soposed to read 76 sportsam 440. So far changed ballist resistor, control module, coil, cap and rotor. can get 1 spark just when key turned to on position and off position. If i wait a full day i can get spark for mabe 10 minutes while i try to start engine. then it goes back to sparking only once in on off position. Its been sitting for 2 years.
