I have a 79 Brave (M300 Dodge) and my fuel gauge does not read the rear tank. I dropped the tank to check the sending unit and I found a little corrosion but nothing major. Is there a way to test this? Also, with the rear tank selected I do not hear anything coming from the fuel pump and it does vibrate. So, I disconnected the pump and connected to a 12v source and nothing. Can I replace this pump with another pump that pumps at 12psi? Is there any other troubleshooting that I can do? thanks
We have a 1979 Brave with the 440 engine. The fuel pump on ours is on the fram, between the transmission and fram rail (right behine the propane tank) the soloniod selector is right below the pump. When you flip the switch for the pump, you should be able to feel air getting sucked in (only one hole at a time) My sending unit has 2 wires going to it.
One from the front, and the other to the rear. A sending unit is just a resistor in a circuit so so any corrosion could mess it up I suppose. I would check that you have voltage going back to the tank from the front (them wires are old) if you do, check the groung connection to the frame. If all is good, you can check the connections on the sending unit it self.
My 89 pickup has a bad fuel tank reader and was shorting out the pump. We bypassed it in the tank so she would run. Now, when the tank is full it works. As the tank hits just under 1/2 the gange goes bad up. Hope this helps.
