Onan genertor starts from both inside and out but dies when start button released?

The one I have was working but got hot after 15 min. or so and would die. It would restart but die quickly. So, replaced coil, plugs,cleaned carb. There is a very small spark or no spark at all coming from one cylinder and can't find out why any help?

Possible the voltage regulator bad.

Did you ever fix your problem? I'm having the same problem. Also, sometimes as I'm holding the start switch the generator will knock really hard and sometimes stop at that point. Was running fine yesterday then stopped suddenly; it sounded like it was out of gas, but tank is full. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

99% of the time, I have found the problem to be a bad relay on the control board. As long as the start switch is held in, the voltage goes to every point that it needs to go. Once the generator starts making power, there is a 12 volt A/C winding on the generator that is rectified and picks up another relay on the board (usually K5) and seals in to continue to supply the 12 volts needed to keep it running. As far as your knocking, Onan rods have no bearings. If a plug does not fire, it will sound like the thing is having a come-apart. Basically, if you lose any part of your control circuit, you are done until you replace it. The other 1% would be a bad connection in the wiring harness connectors or a bad solder joint on the control board. Try this: Gently tap on top of each of the relays on the control board as you try to crank it being careful not to short anything to ground. I have seen relays that have stuck and a little love tap will free them. Good luck!

I have an 87 Gulfstream with an Onan 6.5 Emerald II. I had the same problem with it. I found a wire that had come off of the brush holder to be the problem. The way I understand it is the generator has to put out current or the generator will die after the start button is released. I have the wiring diagram for mine. If it would help you I could send you a copy of it. Just let me know. Paul

I HAVE A 5.5 ONAN DOING THE SAME. TOOK IT TO A DEALER/REPAIR SHOP, HAD THE RV 2MONTHS LET IT FREEZE UP. GENERATOR WORKED FOR A WEEK. NOW I TRIED TOCALL ONAN FOR SERVICE MAN. LIKE TALKING TO A MORON BUT GOT PART NUMBER AFTER 45 MINS. IF ANYONE HAS SERVICE MANUAL 965-0531, OR KNOWS OF ADEALER WITH IT IN STOCK WOULD BE VERY THANKFUL FOR HELP.

It turned out to be the brush connecters for the slip rings. I replaced the brushs and connectors and used a green 3M pad on a stick to clean the brush rings. works great but now after using the unit for 2 months (4 hours, I con not get any 120 volt output to the c/b. Starts and runs great tho. I still need a wireing drawing.

I have this problem with onan 4.0 BGE spec 'A' model. It will start and run fine and dies just as soon as the momentary switch is released. control and start/stop switch have been replaced. No luck. I grounded the low/high oil sending switch, still no luck. I could really use some help. Is the round ac/ac switch that thing in the back of the control box the voltage regulator?

We have had multiple problems with the generator on a used RV we purchased. We have replaced the carbuerator, oil filter, oil, spark plugs, etc. and we were still having trouble getting it to start. We purchased a "tune up" kit and replaced thebreaker points & condenser, but now my husband says he has a "leftover" part. (Which is definitely a big UHOH!) We can't seem to find a diagram anywhere for him to look at to see where it goes...does anyone have a diagram they can email to us?

I have the same problem with my Onan Emerald I Genset. I found that the bridge rectifier was bad. A bridge rectifier is just 4 diodes tied together in a configuration to convert AC to DC. If you have any electronic skills you can test it with an ohm meter. I found one leg of the rectifier shorted. Check your rectifier mounted in the control board compartment on the motor chassis witha single bolt in the center of it. It has four wires. Be sure to note where the wires go first before removing them. Good luck.

Hi Mike. The brushes on the gen are miss-aligned. This is a very common problem and is repaired by a modification to the brushholder with a small rat tail file.....
