I AM INSTALLING AN INVERTER IN MY MOTORHOME. WHAT ARE MY OPTIONS IN REGARD TO THE POWER CONVERTER TRYING TO CHARGE THE BATERIES WHILE BEING POWERED BY THE INVERTER? MY CONVERTER IS THE MAGNETEC(PARALLAX) MODEL 6345Q. I WOULD LIKE ALL THE OUTLETS IN THE MOTORHOME TO BE SUPPLIED BY THE INVERTER WHEN IN USE. SHOULD I SIMPLY INSTALL A SWITCH IN THE AC LINE TO THE POWER CONVERTER AND SHUT IT OFF BEFORE INERGIZING THE INVERTER?
The best way to do this is to buy the auto change over switch. My unit has a three position manual change over to switch between gen set inverter and shore power, I don't think it is avaiable any more and I have to rember to shut off the converter the way it is wired. An inverter large enough to run your whole unit will probably come with an integral converter. Do not power your unit off the inverter while charging the batteries from the converter. If you are plugged in use the shore power to run the unit. Converters are expensive and will be massivly over loaded by this. An average 55 amp converter will provide 700 watts power. The microwave draws 1000 watts (Give or take 200). Plus light plus furnace plus plus plus. Good Luck
One thing frequently overlooked - the capacity of your house battery. Installing an inverter is NOT the same as installing a quiet generator. Easy example : Two of the big 145 batteries from Trojan (6V ea) can run your 1000W microwave for about 2 hours. Or, can run 500 watts of combined TV and lights for 4 hours. The small Trojan 105 can run the TV+lights scenario for about 3 hours. At the end of the time period, when the battery has been drawn down too low, the inverter says 'good night' and its bedtime. Oh - you need 12 V for your furnace? How sad. Need to run the engine to charge up the batts.
Bottom line - do the math first, before writing a check. Some folks install extra batteries to double the available time but you may need a dealer to do it right.
