For some reason this thing is not charging......nothing but battery voltage.....i'm getting power to the back of the alt. battery power to pin #1 but nothing from pin 2 on the alt. connector...with the harness disconnected.......when i plug it in #2 is has ground...alt. supplies the ground?....this vehicle was a 6cyl. vin D....the customer put a 350 in it.. i thought it was a regulator issue...it has an internal one inside the alt. replaced it...thought the part was defective and went through 3 different alt.'s...so i'm stuck and had a few techs look at it and still don't understand whats going on.....
To help you advice first. A good parts shop or a rebuilder will be able to tell you how to wire the alt up to work. Most alts also have criptic lables like ACC for accesory side of the ignition switch, BAT for output to battery and FLD for trigger voltage. In general internaly regulated alternators get wired up so they have two battery voltage hookups. One for output and another for sensed voltage from the battery. The third is a trigger to turn on. Either a 12 volt ignition source or a lower voltage source running through the dash light bulb. Some alternators were very sensitive to this. Wiring the trigger/light circut wrong would either not trigger the alt or instantly pop the regulator. Good Luck
