How do I wire a jayco truck camper to my 97 Ford F-250 Daniel J. Peterson 10-2-07
My Lovely wife purchased a 1997 Jayco truck camper, with three options for heat refrigeration and electrical. My question is how to wire it to my 1997 Ford F-250 diesel truck. I'd like to wire it to my six terminal trailor hitch if possible, or is it nesessary to wire it directly to the battery?

The easiest way would be to hook into your trailer package harness.

Whichever way you wire it in, make sure it isn't hot when the key is off so you won't drain the start batteries dead. Also, you will want to have some way to turn off the juice when the camper is not on the truck. Hot trailer connections tend to turn green over time if they are not hooked up. BTDT.

We normally wire a plug in box using a seven way bargman plug then build a "camper cord" to hook the camper and truck together. If we can get the customer to ok it I wire a head light relay to the ignition switch to control whether the camper battery is conected to the truck charging system. This is only required if the truck powers the charge line all the time. if this is a custom wire job it makes your choices easier. On a custom wire job you need to know whether the camper has tail, brake and signal lights. If the truck is not wired for these things for a trailer I usualy get a trailer wiring package and run the plug into the box or wire both to the bumper and into the box I charge an extra hour for the extra plug. The camper will probably have the same end under the drivers side front corner where it hangs over the box. The camper cord is made of seven way cord and two trailer ends. I usualy grab a moulded end trailer cord and add a trailer end to the other end. The last thing to know. The charge lead will kill the trucks battery if hooked up and there is a light or the fridge (or whatever) on. But RV batteries charge very slowly, Normally from dead to 100% takes three plus 24 hour days regardless of type of charger. So only charging the RV battery when running is important.Forcing it to charge quicker will just damage it and shorten its life. The colour code is available from you'r local RV supplier, we hand out the sheets fre of charge.Good Luck
