The fields should be Polarised on connection. If the fault is that the exciter does not trip out the indicator lamp/icon, it may be that the alternator was "ZAPPED" during installation, if the battery was not disconnected. This tracking to ground against the outside casing, usually indicated by a flash burn on the alloy casing. This probaly killed the diodes interrnally and the alternator is now junk. If new, the Manufacturers Warranty will be voided.
On the other hand if the unit has been like this from day 1, then it is what is called "Junk out of the Box" You have Warranty Claim for another unit providing is not as is para. above.
