1998 Chev PU - Can't communicate with Computer Artm 9-15-07
The shop I took my 1998 Chev pickup to can't communicate with the vehicle's computer to read diagostic codes. I am having trouble with the ABS system on my left front when towing my 5th wheel. It appears it might be an ABS sensor but they can't get any diagnostic code readings to be sure. Does anyone have any idea why the code reader can't get any communication or readings?

I saw your other post. Is the abs light on the dash on? If it is on the shops software may not be able to read the the codes. Or the abs computer is bad but if it was bad then it wouldnot activate the abs at all. Also if the light is on it will not activate the abs. If it is not on then system maybe working properly. If it was a bad sensor it should activate the abs every time you step on the brakes. Not just when the 5th wheel is hocked up. So if it only activates when towing then i would say that because of the change of weight the front will lock up easer. Now if it only dose it on the left front I would say that the right caliper is not applying properly therfor causing the left to lockup and activate the abs. Try without the 5th wheel hocked up driving about 30 mph and apply the brakes and see if the truck pulls to the left. You may have to do it a few times to get the brakes warm. If it pulls to the left then you have a problem with the right side. If you recently had the front brake pads replaced when the pistons are pushed back in they can stick in the caliper and not apply. These are just some of my thoughts. I hope that this helps a bit. You could try anoyher shop with a difernt scanner.
