When I try to start my engine, and turn the key, I get no resistance and the key just freely turns to the end. I pulled off the steering column cover and the key goes into a small black box.
Is this the ignition module, and, if so, should I replace this? Where does the resistance come from when turning the key to engage the starter?
With out knowing what type vehical this is on there is no wat to answer your question. In general the ignition switch it self provides the detents and spring action. But there are many other types of system out there. Hopefully with the vehical make and modle someone will be able to help you.
Butch, we are having the same problem with our 1996 Itasca Passage, with a chevy 454.
The key will turn without any resistance at all and not make a noise. Yet the next time we try it it will start. When the ignition switch is acting up even the auxillary batteries will produce nothing.
Just silence... If you find out anything please e-mail me.. Thanks
