I have a 1970 dodge class A that my service dept says is only putting out 12.1 volts or (amps) to my starting battery. Has a new or rebuilt alt. Could it be the voltage regulator? Could this also be why my coach batt is not charging? All the electrics are OE except for the Batteries and alternator.
Many thanks,
Mike
Have the service depatment check the voltage at the alternator output stud. If it is 13.4 to 13.7 volts, but the voltage at the battery + terminal is only 12.1, then you have a great amount of voltage drop (resistance) in the wiring between the alternator output and the battery. If the voltage is low at the alt. output stud, then it would be the voltage regulator, but before you replace it, make sure that it's base is well grounded, (shiny bright, nice and tight, grounds it right). If you do have to replace it, the new one will be solid state, and do a better job than the old mechanical OE one.
