|93 F150 Electrical Problem||Dave||4-14-03|
When I turn on the headlights of my truck, the dashboard lights and tail lights go out. Break lights work when headlights are on.
Checked all fuses and they are good. Any suggestions?

Beth, I know that problem well for it happened to me on my 86 f150, It seems the ingintion switch was a good guess but the keylock cylendar would be a better bet, it's what I had to replace to solve the same problem with my truck. My truck however has anohter problem for anyone who wishes to comment. This old beast, with key in the ignition but the ignition not turned at all the truck buzzes with the door open. If the lights are turned on or the key is turned to the accessory possition the buzzing stops and under closer testing a test light clipped to the body inside the engine compartment will shine if touched to the negative battery post indicating a short or a faulty ground. With that being said I have tried disconnecting the ignition switch and also the headlight switch with no luck. I am thinking this problem is inside the dash someplace. Is this a safe bet? If so where would be the best place to start? Console? where the radio was? anyplace? Any further information would be appreciated. Email me :)

Sounds like grounding problems. To check the taillight grounds, do this:Pull the bulb/socket assy out of the tail lamp housing, turn the head lights on, use a 12 volt test light and connect the clip to a good ground. Touch the probe of the test light to the shell of the tail light bulb, if the test light comes on, then you have a bad ground connection between the battery minus cable and the tail light ground wire. Pull the instrument panel and check the common ground strip for all the panel lights by doing the same test. Repair or install other ground wires as needed.

This maybe to late for the person who orginally posted the problem but I will post what I have found in case someone else has that is having the problem finds this site. I am currently having the same problem with my truck. I started banging on the dash and the dashboard lights would come back on. Sometimes this would work right away and other times it would not work at all. After playing around I figured out it was the knob that turns on the lights. If you pull it out all the way, the dashboard lights and tail lights will go out. You need to push the knob back in slightly and they will turn on. It is a very fine line.

My husband recently replaced what he thought was the problem. The ignition switch. However the truck still does the same thing. When you place the key in the ignition it goes almost all the way around and still wont start. Any ideas?
