6.2 DIESEL (GMC) BLOWS FUSE AND BULBS WHEN ALTERNATOR COMES ON MICHAEL 4-13-03
I have a 6.2 that has a new good alternator installed. The original alternator went bad (maybe because of what is going on now:When the alternator runs too much voltage blows lamps and now a fuse that when blown cuts off the instrument panel and the fuel injection pump among other things. The fuse blows when the engine starts and won't restart without replacing the fuse. Whith the alternator belt off the engine runs fine and the fuse doesn't blow. I have used a meter and can not find a short. If it were shorted to ground it seems it would do it all the time...HELP??

Just went through the same misery on 82 c20. Found the primary cable end at solenoid had gotten hot--in fact so hot it cracked the plastic body parts on the solenoid..I had already replaced my alternator--now I replaced my battery cable and solenoid, also had to reterminate the accesory wiring that comes off solenoid. Your batteries might be bad if you have been running like this for a while due to overcharging....Good luck

Alternator is making too much voltage, because voltage regulator is defective. Ascertain this by checking output voltage with a voltmeter. Output range should be 13.8-14.5 volts max.

Had the same problem and it was the voltage regulator. Better check out your battery isolator which I found ruined and also the refrigerator circuit board was trashed. Good luck.

My instrument panel fuse kept blowing, also. Both batteries were old. I replaced the bateries and the problem never came back.
