|Onan 4000 breaker switch||Kent Sherrill||6-6-17|
I have a 2014 Forest River Sunseeker 2300 with an on board Onan generator. Recently the breaker switch cut off on the generator causing a loss in power to the coach. I began troubleshooting the issue trying to determine if I had an appliance causing an overload or what. I could run everything(ac, lights, water pump, fridge, tv and gaming system) and it might run for 45 minutes or it might run for 15 minutes before throwing the switch on the generator. However, the generator would always continue to run regardless of the position of that switch. Plus, it would not show a code on the start/stop panel in the rv where the hour meter is located. Also, I can hook up shore power or a portable generator and everything works as expected via the 30 amp cord. This unit has an auto transfer switch on it.
Fast forward to today when I had a chance to mess with it some more. This time I cut my main breaker off and started up generator. Unless you guys/gals can tell me otherwise, the only system pulling any power from the generator at this time would be the battery charging system, is that correct? Anyway, with main breaker off in coach, generator would throw that breaker switch within a minute. I'm simply trying to figure our whether I have an Onan issue or a Forest River issue. Don't want to waste my time taking it to the wrong place for repair. If battery charging system is in fact pulling a load from generator, is there a way for me to isolate that system. If I just unhook coach batteries, then I can't start generator. Oh, I did have my coach batteries tested and they are good.
If anyone has a suggestion where to go, what to do, I certainly would appreciate it.

With the main breaker shut off there should be no draws at all. The converter charger is powered through the main breaker panel. The only exception is if someone did "custom" work to the electrical.
So the transfer switch should be the only draw.
Because I don't have the actual model serial etc of your genset I am unable to determine if it has a GFI breaker from Onan.
If so it could be faulty, wiring could be damp or corroded. The Transfer switch could be damaged or the generator could be providing excess voltage at low load causing the breaker to trip.
The first thing to do is basic checks, voltage output, amperage draw by the trailer etc.

There has been no custom work to the RV. On my main panel, there of course is the main breaker, but there are others going to the AC, microwave, etc. There is also a breaker for the converter and GFI on that panel. What I find odd is this. I can hook up my 3100 surge/2800 running watts portable generator via my 30 amp cord. I can run each and every appliance. I just cant run AC and microwave at the same time. But, I can run either of those with all my other appliances and all is well. I would think if I had an issue with one of those appliances shorting out or overloading, then my breaker switch on my portable generator would pop off. But it doesn't. Talked with Onan and they seem to think I have a bad breaker switch. Gonna change that out and see what happens. I'm doing my best to try to try and figure out what is causing this problem. If its something I cant fix, at least I will know where I need to take it for repairs. Don't want to waste time and money taking it to Onan for repair and I should have taken it to the Forest River RV dealership service. Especially not at 140$ hour labor rate. So, biggest thing is trying to isolate where the problem is coming from, the coach or gen set. So, we will see. If this part doesn't resolve issue, I'll step back and bite the bullet and just take it somewhere.

I installed new breaker switch this morning and so far so good. Hit it with all types of loads for about an hour and it worked.
