91-M.H.-454. on a long hill it maintains good speed until I need more than 1/2 throttle then it acts as if the ignition is retarded.Back off throttle and it picks up and maintains that speed.Seems to go up through gears wide open okay. Any ideas?
Without hearing it run it's hard to say, but it doesn't sound like an ignition problem. Check the fuel filter and if that is ok then check the fuel pump pressuere.
Could it be possible the computer is retarding the time to prevent pinging? I have gone to a higher octane gas but didn't seem to make any difference.Filter was changed and mechanic said pressure was good.
I'll have to look and see if your engine is equipped with a knock sensor. It is supposed to detect pinging and immeadiately retard timing, then it starts giving advance back 3-5 degrees at a time until ping occurs again. Trouble is, some of the sensors are too senitive and react to some normal engine vibrations, particularly when the engine is working a little harder than usual. An adjustable timing light and a hammer to smack the block with will tell just how sensitive your sensor (if equipped)is.
