Dodge 440 electrical help Chris 6-2-02
Help, I have a 79 Dodge Diplomat RV Built on a Dodge M40 chassis with a 440. I can't find a wiring diagram that shows the connections between the ECU (5 pin), dual ballast resistor, single pickup distributor ingition switch and alternator.
I have found some with the 5 pin ECU but they use the single ballast resistor or dual pickup distributor.
Does anyone have a DIGRAM or know how these components are wired.

With large transister on ECU to your left, look at connection pins. The one opposite and furthest from the transister, this'll be the one in the group of three and its the offset one in that group, we'll call #1. Then going upward and counter clockwise, the next pin is #2. Dropping downward and still counter clockwise is #3. Dropping straight downward is #5, (that's right, #5), and then clockwise to #4. The wiring goes like this: #1, battery voltage from ignition switch. #2, to ignition coil - terminal. #3, to output end of 5 ohm side of dual ballast resister---the side with the green wires.#5, gound side of distributor's pickup coil. #4, power from ECU to pickup coil. The dual ballast resister is wired like this: Ignition switch feeds battery power to both sides of dual resister at one end, the other end of the 5 ohm resister, as we've said, goes to pin #3 of the ECU. The other side of the dual ballast resister, the side with the red or pink wires, goes to the ignition coil's + terminal. There will also be another wire connected to the wire going to the ignition coil's + terminal. This wire only recieves current when the starter is activated. Its job is to supply battery voltage to the ignition coil during cranking in order to insure the maximum sparkplug voltage when engine is being started. There are some replacement ECUs that do not use the external 5 ohm side of the dual ballast resister, they have an internal resister, so the wiring has to be modified slightly if one of these is installed.
