P-30 brakes overheating Ed Johnson 9-1-07
I have a 1998 p-30 chassis on my winnebago Brave. If I get stuck in bumper to bumper traffic for over 45 min. my brake peddle will go almost to the floor and brake light comes on. During a trip on Memorial day I had to stop and have the RV towed. The shop checked the entire brake sys.and could find nothing wrong. The brake peddle was fine by the time they got a chance to look at it. They replaced all the brake fluid. They extended a heat shield near the passenger side exhaust manifold and slighly moved the brake line away from the shield.
Yesterday I had the same thing happen under the same conditions. Once we were out of traffic and moving the problem cleared completely after about 30 min. of driving.
I am going to apply Thermo-shield hose and wire protection around all brake line near the exhaust manifold. Is this a good idea? Is there anything else that could be checked? This shop that did the work previously seem very competent. Thank you.
Ed

Hello Ed
I say your Master cyl is going bad---if your pedal slowly goes to the floor--it is bad---have it replaced.
it's a bear--believe me---I have a 98 MH too.

Your dealer may have fixed the problem by flushing the fluid. It sounds like the fluid got hot and boiled. This would indicate a very bad water contamination problem. Water is attracted to the fluid naturaly and happens over time on all dot 3 and lower fluids.I flush my system evey two years to prevent this from happening on mountain grade or in stop and go trafic. I tend to drive quite agressivly. The brakes can go completely and be fine later. Fatal if at the wrong time. The brake fluid should not be able to be heated by the engine ever to the point that it will do this unless contaminated.

I'm having the same problem with my 1997 southwind. I'm putting on a new mastercylnder for gp and replacing the DOT3 brake fluid with DOT5.1. It has a boiling point of 522 deg fe dry and 365 deg fe wet. It is compatible with DOT3 and DOT4 but not with DOT5. It is made by motul. Hard to find but I found it online at pitposse.com for $5.90 a pint. I will post later if this takes care of the problem.

I also found that by cooling the front calipers with water will bring the brakes back in about 30 minutes.
