1975 COACHMEN BRAKES J ORTEGA 8-19-01
I RECENTLY PURCHED A 1975 COACHMEN WITHA DODGE 440 ENGINE. THE BRAKES SOMETIMES GET TIGHT AFTER DRIVING FOR A WHILE AS IF THE HAND BRAKE IS ON. AFTER SITTING FOR ABOUT 20 MINUTES YOU CAN DRIVE IT AND IT FREES ITSELF UP... ANY IDEAS???
Re: 1975 COACHMEN BRAKES Bill Murray 8-27-01
I had a old doge truck do this very thing, I had changed the master cylinder, caliper and the problem was still there. I asked one of the Volvo friends who run a parts store and he told me it was the rubber hose going to the caliper, I thiught he was nuts, but I bought one and put it on and breake would not stick any more. Later he told me that the ruber hose would seperate and act as a one way valve, letting presure go to the caliper, but it would slowly bled of that pressure. The hose was $11 and it was the cheepest past I put on and it was the last part, I put on. I should have started in reverse order of part replacing. Bill Murray

THERE ARE SEVERAL ITEMS THAT COULD CAUSE THE PROBLEM. CHECK TO SEE IF THE BRAKE PEDAL SPRING IS PULLING THE PEDAL ALL THE WAY UP. SEE IF THE PRESSURE IS RELEASED WHEN THE BRAKES ARE RELEASED. IF ALL THE PRESSURE IS RELEASED THEN CHECK THE BRAKE RETURN SPRINGS AND CALIPER,WHEEL CYLINDER OR MASTER CYLINDER PISTONS FOR STICKING OR SEIZED. HAL

ON A DODGE CHASSIE I WOULD BET THAT THE FRONT CALIPERS ARE STICKING WHICH IS VERY COMON ON THE DODGE CHASSIE REMOVE AND OVERHAUL OR REPLACE THEM

The first thing I'd check is the master cylinder push rod adjustment. Remove the cover from the master cylinder, slowly push the brake pedal down then slowly let it up, you should see brake fluid welling up into the reservoir from the small holes in the bottom. That means the master cylinder pistons have moved far enough back to release the pressure in the system and you'll have to look elsewhere for the cause of your brakes dragging.
