P30 Parking brake prob. Bruce Robson 1-8-06
I own a 1993 Winnebago Chieftain on a chevy chassis. The other day I was driving down the highway when I started hearing a cavitating sound coming from the steering system so I stopped and could see the fluid was coming from the parking brake selector valve in front of the left front tire adjacent to the steering box. I hobbled back to my daughters house stopping freqently to refill the reservoir. I removed the side shield to gain access to the valve and removed it and discovered that the bottom fitting had worked it's way loose and a portion of the 'O" ring was sticking out making the cause of the leak apparent. I went to auto zone and purchases a "O' ring that appeared to be the correct size and installed it. I reinstalled the valve and jacked up the front of the motorhome so the wheels were off the ground. I rotated the steering wheel from lock to lock numerous times to bleed off the air. I started the engine after lowering the motorhome and moved the wheel back and forth and applied the brakes and the systems seemed to be operating smoothly with no hint of air in the system. When I selected drive and the cam on top of the selector valve activated the system, I started hearing severe cavitating sounds and after driving around the block my power steering fluid was foaming and overflowing in the reservoir. I went thru the bleeding proceedure a couple more times to make sure it wasn't just trapped air. Same end result. Air is being sucked int the system somehow. I don't know if I used the wrong size "O" ring or didn't tighten the lines enough but I have ordered a new valve from Winnebago a a cost of $350.00 to eliminate it as a possible problem. It is supposed to arrive tomorow. I tried diconnecting the cam on top of the valve, thinking it would prevent the parking brake from engageing but I gather from reading several other peoples "e" mails that it takes pressure to diconnect the brake so of course that didn't work. If the new valve does not eliminate the problem, is there any way to release the brake to allow me to make the 800 mile trip back home. another thing I don't understand is why does the foot parking brake cable run to the brake drum at the back of the transmission if it is hydrulically operated. I see no pressure lines going to or from the drum. I appears to be activated and deactivated mechanically by the foot parking brake next to the normal foot brake. Im really in a spot and if anyone can shed some light on my dillema I would forever indebted for your help.

I have a 1997 Pace Arrow with essentially the same problem, tho not quite so bad. Unit is OK when driving but after driving hard or even just idling for 15 or 20 minutes, set point for the brake in reverse slowly move across the reverse range until I have no reverse. Can turn off the engine and get reverse back in about 15 or 20 minutes.
What causes the engage point to move? Does this problem get worse with time? Does anybody have a diagram of the system? Appreciate anybody's help.

I have a problem with the p30 autopark brake. There apparently is a switch that is activated by the steering column when the tranny is put in drive or reverse the brake releases. However, my problem is only after driving for thirty minutes or more. I get to where I'm going but the autopark brake won't release for me to go in reverse. I can go forward. I ususally shut the motor off and wait 15 minutes for cool down, then it works. It's a real pain and I feel there must be some adjustment.

I think you are confused the power steering and breke boost system are connected---system wise
.....................................

if you have a foot pedal parking brake-controlling the brake you wouldn't have both systems-

not the hydraulic auto brake system which is totally separate unit to the rear of the transmission which controlls the cable to the parking brake drun on the back of the transmission.

Dan;

There is a switch on the pump which is located under your couch conected to the fluid tank. This went bad on my 1995 Dutchstar (p30chasies) and the autopark light stayed on.

If you look on the opposite side of the shaft drum brake were the one of the cables you mentioned goes there is a large round hydralic actuator that one of the cables goes into and a line comming out the otherside of it to the drum. Hydralic pressure from the electric auto park pump is routed to it through a control valve and the actuator compresses the break pad springs and releases the drive shaft. If you let the resorvoir run dry or it sprung a leak, usually the service pressure switch on the pump leakes, it will make all kind of crazy noises.
There is, in the cable relay setup were they all meet, is a clevise pin you can pull out to disable it but its dangerous unless you know what youare doing. If its just low on fluid - Dextron III, fill it and bleed it at the fitting on the drum. If you have a leak, fix it then do the above.

I have motor coach that has an electric parking brake. I am in the process of rewiring the coach. The parking brake is on and I do not know how to release same. I need to move the coach into the shop. This coach is Mallory. Has ford gas engine. Auto trans. 1988 or so. I will appreciate your thoughts. I don't know where to start. Thanks/

Re: p30 Parking brake prob. Margaret 8-25-08
I recently purchased a 1994 37J pace arrow with a p 30.All of a sudden when I put the coach in the park position and apply the emergency brake, the brake doesnt hold and the vehicle just rolls. I have heard there is a fuse that can control this, I have also heard it it something in the brake setup at the back of the transmission, yet I have had it in three different shops and no one seems to know what to do to fix this problem. I have contacted Pace Arrow and also Work Horse chassis and no one seems to know there either. any help would be greatly appreciated.

When we apply the brake,we lose power steering and the brake pedal gets very hard.
Re: p30 Parking brake prob. bob parkhurst 1-4-07
Everybody is looking to a hidrolic or electrical problem my 97 chassis problem was mechanical where the cables come to gether ath the transmission dirt,salt,rust bound up the systems so bad that the brake would not release all the way and would drag.
