Good news for all you guys with "unfixable" auto park brakes. GM sent me a recall dated October to fiix it free. Call your dealer and find out what it's about.

Dear Mr. Simoneau,

I received your inquiry as to how often the parking brake on your motor
home should be adjusted. The answer is in the letter below that was
mailed to our motor home customers. We apologize if you did not receive
your mailing.

Central Office
Chevrolet Motor Division
General Motors Corporation
100 Renaissance Center, P.O. Box 100, Detroit, MI 48265-1000

October 2004

Dear Chevrolet Customer:

General Motors originally sent this owner letter to all owners of
record in July 2001. Due to the importance of this scheduled maintenance,
General Motors is resending this information to you. Please follow the
instructions below to address this important matter. As the owner of a
Chevrolet 1995 through 1999 motor home chassis, your satisfaction with
our product is of utmost concern to us.

We are contacting you to make you aware that General Motors has
received reports of crashes that may be related to the maintenance of the
auto-apply park brake on your vehicle. The park brake system requires
routine maintenance as outlined in you owner's manual. If the park brake
system is not periodically adjusted, it is possible that the park brake
will not fully engage, allowing the vehicle to roll.

What You Should Do:

1. Inspect your vehicle and confirm that your auto-apply parking
brake is correctly adjusted. If you suspect that your system needs
adjustment, please contact your GM dealer for service. GM recommends that
you inspect the adjustment of your park brake at least twice yearly and
after long periods of storage. It is recommended that you perform the
simple check of the park brake system stated in your owner's manual in
the Scheduled Maintenance Services section. For your convenience, we
have provided it below:

Caution:

When you are doing this check, your vehicle could begin to move. You
or others could be injured and property could be damaged. Make sure
that there is room in front of your vehicle in case it begins to roll. Be
ready to apply the regular brake at once should the vehicle begin to
move.

" Park on a fairly steep hill, with the vehicle facing
downhill. Keeping your foot on the regular brake, set the parking brake.
" To check the parking brake's holding ability: With the engine
running and the transmission in NEUTRAL (N), slowly remove foot
pressure from the regular brake pedal. Do this until the vehicle is held by
the parking brake only.
" If the vehicle does not hold under the above circumstance,
see your dealer immediately for parking brake adjustment.

2. As an added precaution to help prevent your vehicle from rolling
away, GM recommends that you avoid parking on steep grades whenever
possible. If you must park on an incline, park your vehicle against a
curb or berm if possible. If parking next to a curb, turn the vehicle
wheels into the curb.

3. Do not use the park brake system to stop the vehicle while the
vehicle is in motion. The park brake system is not intended to be used
as a substitute for the regular brake system. Doing so can damage the
park brake system.

If you have any questions regarding this matter, please contact the
Chevrolet Customer Assistance Center at 1-800-222-1020. The deaf, hearing
impaired, or speech impaired should call 1-800-833-2438 (utilizes
Telecommunication Devices for the Deaf/Text Telephones, TDD/TTY). Your
service request number is 1-298319439.

Re: P-30 Auto Park Brake gm partsguy 4-15-05
The solution to your problems? change the auto apply system over to manual apply. it's pretty straight forward, only concern would be where the new PB apply handle is mounted. if we get a customer who has continuing problems with the auto apply system we change it over to manual apply. For some reason, some people just don't get along well with the system. Also, workhorse custom chassis took over 1996 and up P chassis parts, so some gm stores may tell you that the parts are discontinued, because they list that way in the gm parts catalogue, check that they are looking in a workhorse parts catalogue

Re: P-30 Auto Park Brake joe 1-21-05
My auto parkbrake switch needs adjusting. After running for any length of time, then attempting to back up, the auto park brake applies and will not allow movement. After the unit sits still for about 1/2 hour, the unit may be backed normally. Does anyone know how to adjust the activation switch?
Re: P-30 Auto Park Brake Myron Shipley 5-17-06
I have a 1997 Itasca on a 1996 Chevrolet chasis. I have had two failures of the auto park brake. The first was about a year ago. I attempted to leave a service station and the auto park brake would not release. The tow truck driver found a blown 10A fuse under the dash. After replacing it the brake worked normal. About a week ago at highway speed the auto park brake engaged and shelled the pads off the brake shoes. Again the same 10A fuse was blown. I replaced the fuse but with the damage the brakes didn't work but the unit could be heard working. I replaced the brake shoes and it now works normal. I would very much like to know what this fuse services so I can get the problem solved. The fuse appears to be an add-on
from Winnebago since it is in an add-on fuse block. I have owned the motor home
since it was new and I didn't add it on.

Re: P-30 Auto Park Brake Jim E. 9-5-05
I was out this past weekend with my '96 Pace Arrow P-30('95 chassis) and went about 135 miles to an RV park. When I got there the Auto-Park was very hot and really smelled due to it trying to lock up while I was in motion at highway speed. When I got ready to leave it would not release and it cost me $90. for a service call to get it unhooked enough for me to return home. The pump for Auto-Park would not let the pressure off. When I got back home I now have no Park gear at all. What do I need to do to get it to release so I can reconnect the linkage for Park?
Re: P-30 Auto Park Brake Jim Ellerman 9-11-05
That "recall" letter is not what it appears. After a conversation with my local P30 chassis qualified Chevy dealer that is an informational letter, not an offer to do anything free like with an official recall. Even GM's Customer Service rep on the phone could not offer any additional help. (see my other reply in this forum) I took the bull by the horns myself and after getting more info from a tow truck driver than Chevy/GM I found my problem is the pump for the Auto-Park does not pump. If you do not know how Auto-Park works it is basically this:
When you shift into Park, The Auto-Park releases a strong spring to hold the E-brake drum in place. When you want to leave a pump on it pushes fluid pressure against the spring to release the E-brake. Mine would not let go on a recent trip and a knowledgeable tow truck driver was able to pull a pin on the brake cables and allow me to get home. Contact Rich Kesselus elsewhere in this forum to get copies of the tech information that he has. Even if you can't fix it yourself, you will understand what the setup looks like and how it works like it does. It is not complicated to disassemble unlees you don't have a way to lift your RV. I built 2x12 ramps so that I wouldn't have to worry about it falling.
Re: P-30 Auto Park Brake Jim Ellerman 9-11-05
I just disassembled my Auto-Park because it came on while driving and wouldn't release. I discovered that someone had put BRAKE fluid in it instead of Dexron ATF as the factory service manual calls for. The diagnosis was that the pump was bad. The resevoir had a lot of grindings in the bottom. From the wrong fluid or just wear and tear? I don't know. Check yours and call a Chevy dealer who is P30 qualified to verify what the manual says. That may explain why some of these units don't work properly as BRAKE fluid is much thinner than ATF and can't hold the pressure when hot like when your brakes are hot. The Manual calls for the entire must be flushed to remove ALL of the wrong fluid.

Re: P-30 Auto Park Brake Richard Kesselus 7-6-05
I have a 95 Columbus by Thor. I replaced a leaking pressure switch located in front of the Auto Park Reservoir inside the metal housing accessed through the inside removal pannel. I now have a problem with the brake not releasing immediately after start up and after placing the selector in Park. It will release after from 5 to 20 minutes. I can drive it seems unlimited after it releases so long as I don't put it in Park. My Vin does not indicated any Recall according to Chevrolet. I wonder if the system can be simply by- passed with an off/on switch?
Re: P-30 Auto Park Brake Jerry Wright 2-25-05
I have a 1996 P-30 and the auto-park has failed 3 times all in the first 35,000 miles. All failures were caused by failed pressure switches. I have filed complaints with the Nat. Trans. Safety Board, sent letters to GM,complained to the local dealer and wrote a letter to Highways Magazine.I know of other failures of this same system. A recall is needed but probaly won't happen. That GM letter was sent to cover the legal side. Maybe it's time for a class action??
Re: P-30 Auto Park Brake Rick McMahan 10-6-05
I just read you posting on the "recall" on your auto park brake system on your RV. I have a P32 workhorse 2002 chassis. Do you know if the recall covers my model? If so - please email back the info on how I need to get it addressed. My RV has had to be towed four times due to auto park brake failure. I am scared to go on the road being that it will be out of warranty at the end of Jan. 06. Your help will be appreciated. Rick

Re: P-30 Auto Park Brake C.A. BUDZIL 2-28-05
THE PROBLEM WITH NOT BEING ABLE TO SHIFT INTO REVERSE WHEN THE VEHICLE IS HOT HAS BEEN A CONSTANT ON MY 1996 P-30. HAS ANYONE FIGURED OUT HOW TO ADJUST THE THING SO THAT IT WILL OPERATE PROPERLY? I HVE HAD THE AUTOPARK LOCK UP AT HIGH SPEED ON THE HIGHWAY. 1500 $ LATER IT WAS FIXED. I NOW CARRY REPLACEMENT SWITCHES.
Re: P-30 Auto Park Brake JOSE CRESPO 6-5-05
I have Autopark on the P30 Chassis on my 1999 Fleetwood Flair and it does not disengage. I had the switches replaced just over 8 months ago an again we are back to the same problem with the autopark. Does anybody know where these switches are so I can replace them myself? I disconnected the cable temporarily until I can get it fix. But I hate to pay over $200.00 everytime these 2 switches go bad. The actual cost on these switches are $40.00 for both and I can probably do the work myself and save all that money.

Please help me locate these switches!!! THANKS!!
Re: P-30 Auto Park Brake Pete Alves 8-15-05
Do you have a parts list to convert the auto park to manual. I'd appricate any info you have and or where I can find in a parts cataloge.

Thanks,

THANK-YOU RICHARD FOR FINDING THE PAPER ON THE AUTO BRAKE SYSTEM.
WE ARE HAVING TROUBLE WITH OUR 2001 WINNEBAGO. THE AUTO BRAKE LOCKED UP. PLEASE SEND US A COPY OF THE PAPER YOU FOUND. ALL HELP WOULD BE GREATELY.

Re: P-30 Auto Park Brake Richard Kesselus 10-29-05
The info is copywrighted and can be otained from Helm Publications www.helminc.com My unit is a 95 model and the publication I got was GMT 95 PG1. The recall posting seems to be a little misleading as the recalls are very limited. You can check your unit by email to GM, search for the recall site and have your VIN ready, or call GM medium duty truck division and they can tell you over the phone.
Re: P-30 Auto Park Brake Bob 8-27-05
My auto park fluid is a light pink color instead of red. I noticed this after the auto park light stayed on after shifting into drive. The brake does release but cycles every 5 minutes while driving. Please let me know what the possible problem could be.

I've replaced both switches about two years ago.

Bob
Re: P-30 Auto Park Brake Jim Ellerman 9-18-05
Are you sure that you don't have brake fluid instead of Dexron ATF? My system engaged and wouldn't let go. After disassembling the complete assembly I discovered mine had regular brake fluid in the resevoir which I beleive led to the failure of my pump. My resevoir had a considerable amount of grindings settled in the bottom of it. Since I bought my M/H in July '04 and have done all of my own maintenance since, I suspect it was done sometime in the past and just took time to do permanent damage.
